Jack Wolfskin
Idstein, Hamburg & Hannover – 6 February 2009. Jack Wolfskin, a leading outdoor brand and the largest sports franchisor in the German market, have launched their new online store (shop.jack-wolfskin.de) on a solution developed by Visions. The shop was developed on the basis of Magento, Varien's open source e-commerce platform, and – like its predecessor, the Wolfskin Mailorder Shop - is operated by Globetrotter Ausrüstung; it went live simultaneously with the new summer 2009 collection. Featuring a novel navigation concept and advanced selection of product variants, customers are able to find their desired product within seconds; matching accessories are suggested and browsing the catalogue is encouraged by the friendly interface. Additionally, a strong focus was placed on performance and short loading times. On the backend side, a complete integration with Globetrotter's system could be achieved through Visions' Magnamics Integration Engine; for example, stock levels are constantly synchronised and existing Globetrotter customer accounts – with associated discounts - can be used on the new system. Development proceeded in close collaboration Globetrotter's IT team on a shared development environment provided by Visions, enabling a rapid launch of the new system. The shop is powered by Visions' high availability e-commerce Cluster, which can guarantee top performance even under peak load. The choice of platform was immediately confirmed by an especially successful start to the 2009 summer season.Rapid Findability
Visions extended Magento's layered navigation model to enable filters to be applied to the entire category tree; customers can now select, for example, that they wish to be shown children's clothing while browsing the store. It is always possible to change filters with just one click, of course. This enables the customer to focus directly on the products interest, rather than having to check each product page individually for suitability. Category pages already indicate the colour variants available for each product; a variant can directly be selected through a mouse over as the default choice on the product page.
A newly developed grid assists customers in selecting size and colour of their garment on the product page. The grid is dynamically adapted to the number of variants available, enabling an optimal presentation for each product. Importantly, this ensures that customers can immediately see which options are available for each product, as well as upcoming new variants and items currently out of stock.
“Usability is a key factor for the conversion rate,” explains Alexander Ringsdorff, Visions' CEO, “and we were delighted to observe very significant improvements over the predecessor system here even in the first few days”.
More Functionality
“Magento's out-of-the-box functionality is impressive and already covered many Jack Wolfksin requirements,” says Thiess Rathjen, e-commerce project manager at Globetrotter, “and where this was not the case, existing functions could be extended to cover our needs rather than having to be rewritten from scratch”. Added or improved features include product recommendations, wish list functions, recently viewed products panel and search with highly relevant results, as well as many others.
Rapid loading times
Jack Wolfskin regularly observes traffic peaks, especially when new catalogues are launched. Visions could offer a high performance, highly scalable cluster architecture to Jack Wolfskin that can handle such traffic patterns effortlessly. In addition to the infrastructure solutions, Visions optimised database queries to suit the specific catalogue data of Jack Wolfskin, improving performance further. Dimitri Gatowski, CTO at Visions, is pleased: “In this configuration, Magento can handle hundreds of requests per seconds”.
