mydeco.com e-basket
London and Hannover – 6 January 2009. mydeco.com, the leading homewares website, has launched an online basket to stream line the shopping experience in the design boutique section of the site. Based on Magento, the leading open-source e-commerce solution, the basket allows customers to buy products in the design boutique section of the web site, directly from the designers. Orders for multiple designers can be collected in the basket and are then relayed to the separate designers who send items directly to the customers. The basket is completely integrated into the main web site, so that visitors do not have the feeling of moving to a distinct shopping application. Being amongst the most ambitious Magento deployments to date, Visions implemented a complete procurement solution into Magento that allows designers to manage the products they wish to offer for sale through mydeco’s design boutique platform. Together with tight integration into mydeco’s backend systems and Visions’ PayOne payment module, these enhancements allow the Magento Administration Panel to be used as the unique internal e-commerce application.Providing the Best Possible User Experience
“mydeco provides everything you need to make your home the best place it can be”, explains David Kelly, CEO of mydeco. We have assembled an impressive catalogue of home wares product from over 700 retailers which is still growing every day sofas to posters and everything in between you can find it all on mydeco. There are also over 1000 “buy-the-look” room ideas for all budgets as well as a section where independent designers can sell their products directly to customers, called design boutique. Together with the ground-breaking 3D room planning tools and 30,000 strong community, mydeco customers can develop their perfect home space. Of course, everyone wants to mix and match freely between different retailers, and one goal of our new e-basket is to enable one-stop shopping for customers within the design boutique area. As David continues, “We were increasingly seeing people wanting multiple items on the site and also needed to improve the payment system within design boutique, so introducing a single basket for all products within design boutique was a logical step to take”.
Magento’s unique template system made it straightforward to integrate the basket completely into the look and feel of mydeco’s web site. And because design and business logic are clearly separated, the basket can stay abreast with updates to mydeco’s user interface. The basket also features single sign in, directly linking mydeco community IDs with Magento customer accounts. Paul Chudleigh, the CTO at mydeco, is content: “It was a priority for us to make sure the basket fitted seamlessly into the site and did not feel like an ‘add-on’. Since relaunching design boutique with the new ebasket , customer experience has been greatly improved and as a result we have seen an increase in sales, which is great. ”.
Magento Modules: From Supplier Management to Fulfilment
“mydeco’s innovative business model does not square well with closed source e-commerce solutions”, explains Alexander Ringsdorff, Visions’ CEO. mydeco empowers shoppers to design their home as they see fit – not to suit the collection of a specific supplier. Using Visions’ solution, independent designers can add items to mydeco’s site for possible inclusion and add their stock levels and delivery times – through Magento’s administration panel. Out of the box, the access control systems in Magento cannot accommodate this need. “Because Magento is completely open and has such an excellent software design, it was possible create a supplier management module to suit mydeco’s needs – without breaking compatibility with future Magento versions”.
On the fulfilment side, orders need to be split up by supplier and then exported to their external systems. This functionality was also added to Magento, complete with handling of partial deliveries, refunds and cancellations. Again, no changes to core code needed to made, so that the extensions are “future-safe”.
Alexander summarises, “With traditional enterprise software, mydeco would have needed a complex and expensive mesh of ERP, CRM and e-procurement systems that could not have met their time-to-market objectives. We are really seeing how open software drives change in this market”.
